On November 12-13, Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions (RMUoHP: www.rmuohp.edu) hosted the Module 1 Graston Technique workshop, which was sponsored by Intermountain Healthcare (www.intermountainhealthcare.org).  Thirty-four physical therapists, occupational therapists, and athletic trainers from across Utah participated in the two-day clinical education event. The Graston Technique (www.grastontechnique.com) uses stainless steel instruments to innovatively reduce recovery time for injuries and resolve chronic conditions through soft tissue mobilization.

Dr. David Paulson, manager of Intermountain Healthcare’s Utah Valley Regional Medical Center Physical Therapy and a Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist in Physical Therapy, commented regarding the workshop, “Bringing together a diverse group of clinicians in an interdisciplinary learning environment at RMUoHP’s excellent facilities provided an opportunity to increase expertise and improve patient care. We look forward to continued collaboration between these two organizations and the resulting benefits to Intermountain Healthcare’s patients.” Echoing Dr. Paulson’s sentiments, Dr. Rick Nielsen, RMUoHP President, noted, “A shared commitment towards improving the delivery of healthcare in our State creates a natural and meaningful alignment between the University and Intermountain Healthcare. We are thankful for the opportunity to engage with other exceptional organizations through which the results directly impact our community.”

On Saturday, August 13, the RMUoHP Foundation hosted the Rocky Mountain 5K charity event at the University’s campus in Provo. Prizes were awarded to the top three female and male runners. Students, employees, and community members participated in the event, which purpose was to benefit the Shaw family of Orem. The Shaws, who have a seven-year old son with special needs related to a seizure disorder, heart and lung disease, and cerebral palsy, had been struggling to adopt a daughter from the Ukraine before she would be released from the orphanage to the streets. As the 5K developed, the Shaws gained custody of their new daughter and funds raised will help them with major medical and adoption expenses.  RMUoHP’s entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy students, who have helped the Shaw’s son with his physical therapy routine, were inspired by the family’s challenges and generosity.
